Teaching Course on Evidence and Research in Rectal Cancer
21 – 23 May 2007, Rome, Italy
The European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) is part of a joint initiative with the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) that aims at promoting an integrated approach between all specialists involved in rectal cancer to tailor the best treatment for each individual patient. With the participation of teachers like L. Pahlman (SE), C. Van De Velde (NL), Z. Krivokapic (SE) from the side of ESSO, the course offers a truly multidisciplinary programme on the advantages of the different treatments for the different presentations of rectal cancer (evidence) and ongoing and future research in rectal cancer.

FECS-AACR-ASCO Workshop on Methods in Clinical Cancer Research
23 – 27 June, Flims, Switzerland
The FLIMS Workshop is an intensive programme for European junior clinical oncologists of all disciplines to learn the essentials of clinical trials design. The core activity will consist of the development and the writing of a protocol through extensive monitoring by an experienced faculty. Surgical oncology is represented in the faculty by Peter Hohenberger (D).
Participation is restricted to 75 participants. Priority is given to those who are close to the end of their Residency/Fellowship training and to junior staff, within 5 years of completion of their training.
F ESSO supports the workshop with 7 fellowship grants to cover the registration fee, travel and accommodation costs for the selected young surgeons.

ESSO Best Posters 2006
Two “best poster” prizes of 500 euros each were awarded during the 13th ESSO Congress last December in Venice. The two awardees are:
